4.11 How Can Learning about AI and Automation Be Integrated into Work Based Learning Programmes?
What work-based learning (WBL) is, or how it is practised in European countries, is in part quite different. This is mainly due to the different vocational training systems. Basically, however, all forms of workplace-oriented learning are meant, i.e. internships in companies or dual training in Germany. The main aim is to build knowledge, skills and competencies by carrying out and reflecting on tasks in a vocational environment.
For many years, there have been efforts to increasingly integrate WBL into previously school-based VET programmes or to further improve already existing WBL programmes.
The idea of WBL is very strongly anchored in the German dual system. While one part takes place at school, the other takes place in a company, i.e. directly in the real working environment. An important point for effective WBL is the cooperation between these learning places.
We ask two german teachers about the cooperation with companies and what the challenges are.
Reflection
The goal of workplace-based vocational education and training is met in Germany through the dual vocational education and training system. The key element is learning location cooperation. In practice, this is often more difficult than expected, as can be heard in part in the short video. However, cooperation and the exchange associated with it will in all likelihood continue to gain in importance. This is how competencies can be bundled to meet the challenges of digital transformation. Michael Graf-Jahnke from the TBZ is working with the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen to be able to impart new knowledge from industry (keyword Industry 4.0) in schools as well. This requires the commitment and efforts of both sides (school and company), but pays off in the end, says the vocational school teacher.
Activity
Are there exciting cooperation projects at your school or company that you can tell other participants about? Or do you have an idea and are looking for actors to put it into practice?
