3.17 Wrapping up Module 3
Congratulations on completing Module 3. ✨
In this module, we have been looking at the ways in which AI is being used for teaching and learning now and exploring ideas about how it might be used in the future.
And we have focused on a series of different case studies drawing on existing practice and including popular online courses as well as projects developed by vocational education and training institutions.
We make the point that AI is not likely to replace teachers and trainers any day soon but working with AI can lead to changing roles. There is an emergent hybrid model of teachers and AI working together with teachers able to focus on creativity and exploration in class while the AI is able to provide differentiated and individual feedback
The different examples cover a wide range of potential uses in education and training including how AI can be used to support learner engagement and both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and assist in learner recruitment.
Chatbots are increasingly being used by VET organisations and for providing guidance and support in careers. Gamification is also utilizing AI and there has been much attention to the popular Duolingo language learning application.
AI can be used to create learning content, particularly through Natural Language generation. AI can not only support a personalized learning experience but can modify and extend access to training programmes through recommender systems and speech to text applications, and, used together with Virtual Reality applications, can allow learners to practice soft skills.
AI is increasingly being used to support formative assessment including open questions and sentence completion for learners and providing feedback and support.
Recently, great strides have also been made to merge Virtual Reality and AI into one form of technology.
We are also seeing the emergence of smart classrooms – physical learning spaces equipped with wireless communication, digital devices, and sensor technology. Data collected via sensors is used by humans or AI systems to provide learning aids, tools, or strategies for learners. A smart classroom is designed to support teachers in the classroom to make learning more effective for students.
The use of AI for teaching and learning is in an early phase, especially in vocational education and training. But, given the sheer breadth of applications being developed, it seems set to rapidly expand in the coming years. If you have any examples of using AI which we have not covered in this module please add them in the comments.
In the next module, Module 4, we will focus on AI, vocational education and new skills requirements. This includes both the skills needed by vocational education and training students for working with AI and the skills and competence needed by teachers and trainers. We will also provide more examples and case studies based on emerging practice in vocational education and training institutions, as well as in enterprises.
